A first generation serial entrepreneur, Surya has the distinction of spotting opportunities where not many would look for. He began his career working for companies like Union Carbide and Nicholas Laboratories but began his entrepreneurial stints with a pharmaceutical company called Recon in 1988, where he helped the company grow aggressively, taking it the top 100, prepared the company to face the post patent era and also successfully created an exit strategy. He then created an IT-enabled health services company called Medybiz in 2000 before selling it of along with Medi Assist, a third party administrator to the Reliance ADAG. He then went on to create a modern chain of pharmacies which was to be later acquired by Religare in 2008. Suryanarayanan has also had his share of success in the field of education. Using all his experience he has helped infuse a paradigm change at the N S Raghavan Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning at IIM Bangalore that includes a business incubator and a seed fund. He now assists as a pro bono mentor at the centre. Surya is a passionate start-up evangelist and also dabbles in angel investing.
Surya is a fellow member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and a Masters in Management from McGill University, Canada.
Surya is now Heads of Operations at IIHS where he is currently responsible for the finance function, setting up of the PWP vertical and creating a vibrant Entrepreneurial Development Centre.
