D Kalyanaraman is a graduate in engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras and also was a honor roll alumnus from the Indian Institue of Management Calcutta. He was a member of the ISI standardization committee and a nominated member in the standardization committee for extra high voltage equipment constituted by the Central Electricity Authority. He sold the company in 1988 and moved to software. He had a major part to play in making Tally, an accounting software into a major powerhouse among the Indian SMEs. In 2006, he sold the IPs that were created o Tally and became the president of the merged entity.

Since 2010, he retired from Tally and has been mentoring a few start-ups.
